Breast Cancer Awareness
Every October, the Breast Cancer Awareness Month is highlighted in countries across the world to help increase the awareness, early detection and treatment of the illness.
According to the World Health Organization, “there are about 1.38 million new cases and 458 000 deaths from breast cancer each year. Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide, both in the developed and developing countries. (…) When breast cancer is detected early, and if adequate diagnosis and treatment are available, there is a good chance that breast cancer can be cured. If detected late, however, curative treatment is often no longer an option.”
The following story has been photographed by Magdalena Lawniczak of the “Body Mirror” project in collaboration with Mallorca-based design studio Accidente con Flores. The joint initiative celebrates the notion of sisterhood, so crucial to the health and well-being of all women today, and hopes to help break down taboos that surround the human (especially female) body. It strives to encourage self-acceptance as well as to open up the discussion about the prevention of cancer, and emphasise the importance of self-examination for women.
For this occasion, Accidente con Flores has created a capsule collection of hair accessories and bags made from organic cotton, and screen-printed and hand-crocheted by local artisans from the Balearic islands. All profits from the sale will be donated to raise funds for the Spanish organisation APAAC (Association of Help to People Affected by Cancer).
