BUNON / Japan/India

BUNON means “weaving” in Bengali, and it is a slow craft shared between India and Japan. All of the collections are made in Kolkata, and silk textiles are handwoven with handspun yarn, from wild silkworms sourced from the local forests. These techniques have been handed down for over 1,300 years, and everything is genuinely done by hand.

Now it’s getting much more difficult to maintain this treasured tradition. A team from Japan meets with local artisans to understand their culture and the circumstances behind production, and share thoughts with each other about the beautiful creations. It’s impossible to produce the same quality all the time as natural factors greatly affect the processes. Their textiles can never be the same, and that makes BUNON even more special and unique.
